Shopping

Many a treat can be found in Kent's County Town in Maidstone's tremendous array of shops. Most shops are open Monday - Saturday from 09.00 until 17.30 and Sunday 10.30 until 16.30 or 11.00 until 17.00. Many shops are now also open for Late Night Shopping every Thursday until 20.00.

Bank Street
Bank Street is probably the most complete historic street in Maidstone and most of the buildings are listed for their architectural or historic interest. 
Bank Street has many quality wine bars and eating establishments, as well as specialty shops.

Broadway Shopping Centre
Tonbridge Road, Maidstone. A wide variety of clothing outlets and a large discount supermarket.
 
Earl Street
The street took its name from the site of a major medieval house, Earl's Place. Home to the Hazlitt Theatre the street has a variety of independent shops and travel agents.

Fremlin Walk
This open air shopping centre is built on the riverside site of a Victorian brewery. The development brings around 50  new shops including House of Fraser, Zara, Oasis, Faith, HMV and Ernest Jones, as well as restaurants and a 800 space car park to the town centre. Visit www.fremlinwalk.co.uk/ for more information.

Gabriel's Hill
Gabriel's Hill was the site of the climax of the Battle of Maidstone, fought on 1 June 1648 during the Second Civil War. A variety of shoe shops, jewellers and eateries are available in this pedestrianised street.
 
High Street
The site of Maidstone Town Hall completed in 1763 which has served many purposes as market space, County Magistrate's Court, Council Chambers and gaol. Many of the major banks and building societies are found here as well as a diverse range of eating establishments and pubs.
 
King Street
Maidstone honoured King George III's visit in 1799 by dedicating a street to his name, after this was used as a route during a visit to review the Kent Volunteers. Major building societies and a supermarket are located here as well as The, Mall Chequers.
 
The Mall, Chequers
Facilities include 1000 car park spaces - with secured car park award. Public toilets and baby changing facilities.

The Mall Chequers presents a wide variety of shopping experiences under one roof with shops including Bhs, Gamleys, H Samuel, Next and Miss Selfridge.  A Shopmobility scheme, covering Maidstone town centre, operates from the multi-storey car park.  Standard and powered wheelchairs can be booked in advance.   Click here for more information on shopmobility.

Pudding Lane
First recorded in the Borough Chamberlains' accounts for 1575-6 as reference to 'a tenement at Podynge Lans end'.
Shops selling children's clothes, Bridal wear and Men's wear are situated here.
 
Week Street
Follows the route of the old Roman road from Rochester to the Weald. The location for many major fashion retailers. This pedestrianised street also has a number of independent and chain stores including sports, variety stores and chemists.
 
Union Street
A local tradition says that this was the route followed by Wat Tyler and his men when they marched into the town from Penenden Heath, August 1381.
Location for electrical goods, independent designer wear clothes shops and charity shops.
 
Royal Star Arcade
The Royal Star Arcade offers a range of specialty clothing and gift shops under one roof.
 
The Corn Exchange
The Corn Exchange is located in Market Buildings next to the Hazlitt Theatre and has a variety of independent specialist shops from clothing and lingerie to cake decorating and art.

Lockmeadow General Market is the envy of many market towns, with up to 100 stalls every Tuesday and 30 stalls on Saturday, many under cover. The general market opens at 0700 until 1430 on Tuesdays and 1330 on Saturdays.
On Thursdays between 0800 and 1800 in the Market Hall, Furniture Sales are held.
On Fridays between 0700 and 1300 in the Market, Fruit and Vegetable Sales are held every other week.
The Market Hall is also the venue for record fairs, antique fairs and other events throughout the year, with Boot Sales almost every Saturday.
